Reading & Literacy

Structured literacy & reading intervention for students with ADHD and reading challenges.

Many students with ADHD also struggle with reading. P.A.V.E. offers one-to-one structured literacy coaching led by a Maryland-certified Reading Specialist with more than 20 years of experience helping neurodivergent students become confident, capable readers.

Does this sound familiar?

Reading is hard, and homework turns into a battle.

Your child avoids reading out loud or pretends they've already read the assignment.

Spelling is inconsistent no matter how much they practice.

They can talk about a topic for hours but freeze when asked to write about it.

Homework that should take 20 minutes takes two hours and ends in tears.

Your child was diagnosed with ADHD — and you suspect reading is a separate struggle.

A school evaluation mentioned a reading or phonological processing challenge.

If any of this sounds familiar, a conversation can help determine whether P.A.V.E.'s educational literacy support may be an appropriate next step.

Our approach

What structured literacy means.

Structured literacy uses explicit, systematic and multi-sensory instruction to build foundational reading skills. It is recommended by the International Dyslexia Association and is supported by established reading research. This approach can be helpful for students who benefit from direct, carefully sequenced instruction.

Sessions move step-by-step through phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We identify a student's current instructional needs and use them to develop an individualized starting point.

Decoding & phonics

Building accurate, automatic word-reading through explicit, systematic phonics instruction.

Phonological awareness

Strengthening the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in words — the foundation of reading.

Fluency & comprehension

Moving from sounding out words to reading smoothly and understanding what's on the page.

Spelling & writing

Connecting reading to writing with structured spelling patterns and sentence-level work.

Why it matters

Reading changes everything — for school and for self-esteem.

Reading difficulties can affect homework, classroom participation and confidence. Carefully structured instruction can help students practice foundational skills while receiving support appropriate to their current needs.

Where appropriate, literacy instruction can be coordinated with practical executive-function supports such as routines, planning and self-advocacy.
